Success Story of Apnipathshala’s Computer Learning Centre at Yusuf Meherally Centre
“Sapno ka sheher”. That’s what they call Mumbai, don’t they? In 1961, one such “sapna” was seen: The Yusuf Meherally Centre! (spoiler alert- it is now a reality). It was started with a mission to change lives through education. Over the period of time, this dream has spread its wings- going from merely education to digital education in India, reaching the hearts of children across eight states in India. Today, it stands as a pillar of hope, especially in the small village of Bhadreshwar in Kutch, Gujarat, where it has been transforming lives since 1996. The story of hope! With a degree in mass communications and no such plan of going into the field of social service, walking on destiny’s path, Mr. Dharmendra Kumar joined the Centre in 2001. He didn’t come alone. He brought a passion with him- a passion for change. The Centre welcomed children who would otherwise be lost in the shadows—kids of salt factory workers, fishermen, migrants, and industrial laborers. For these children, education wasn’t just a right, it was like a light of hope in a world that often felt dark. Imagine a place where education is completely free, where the only cost is the willingness to learn. That’s what Yusuf Meherally Centre offers to over 3,000 students- 1,000 of whom are Hindi speakers and the rest Gujarati. But this story isn’t just about numbers, it’s about dreams. It’s about passion. It’s about using that passion to turn those dreams into reality. Bridging the Digital Gap with Apnipathshala As we all know in today’s world, technology plays a huge role in our lives. Digital education in India is the need of the hour. Basically, it won’t be wrong to say that it has become our whole life. As the center started in their early days, they noticed a problem: many government schools had computers, but they weren’t being used. Power cuts, no trained teachers, and other issues were quite frequent. Basically, these computers were just for the show. Nothing more. To fix this, the center teamed up with Apnipathshala to bring computer education to villages where kids had never even used a keyboard before. With this partnership, they targeted a village where the population is good (around 8000) with a total of 8 schools. Initially, they only taught the government-based curriculum, but with changing times they adapted to the change- teaching about new IT skills. Discussing providing kids with access to computers, if we don’t talk about Ms. Neeta Acharya, would be a great injustice. Every day, she travels 50 kilometers to learn and then teach computer skills to kids. For 1.5 hours, these kids, in batches of 35-40, are not just learning how to use a computer, they’re learning to dream. From Co-Education to Social Message Also, Yusuf Mehrally Centre is just not limited to educating kids on computers and IT skills. They are doing work beyond that as well. In a village where co-education was not quite accepted and popular, the center is bringing in the change. They understand that these children will one day step into a world where working with both genders is a necessity. To make sure that they don’t get nervous, they brought co-education in their learning pod. By encouraging boys and girls to learn together, they’re building a future where gender is not a barrier but a bridge. If we talk about the area, this village is like many others in India mix of communities where most parents have little to no formal education. Farming, labor work, and military service are the usual and basic means to live life. For many parents, schooling looks pointless because they believe their children will end up doing the same jobs they did. But the Centre is slowly changing this mindset. And that is where their real success lies. Every Saturday, the center becomes a place for interaction and learning. Parents come along with their kids, and there’s no formal teaching on this day. Instead, older kids teach the younger ones. It’s a wonderful exchange where building leadership and confidence in these young minds is seen as the main goal. Through these children, the organization also spreads subtle yet powerful messages about important issues like alcohol addiction and domestic violence. They’re raising a generation of kids who think beyond the walls of classes. Success Story from Bhadreshwar Success stories aren’t just about grades or certificates, they’re about real change. See this example of a young boy, the son of a truck driver, who became a perfect example of what education can do. Overcoming Challenges The road to success isn’t always easy. Challenges are bound to come, that’s inevitable. But, the real success lies in how well you manage it all. Initially, they faced violent protests from villagers who feared that education would disrupt their traditional ways of life. They thought if their children would

12 years ago, in a small village near Alwar, Rajasthan, something special started. Back then, when the village’s condition wasn’t great, and people’s mindset was set hundreds of years back. Many saw no future beyond government jobs or labor work, unaware of the opportunities that the IT sector could bring. But all of that began to change- thanks to one man and his dream, Mr. Gokul Saini. His dream is to see every kid from the village live with heads up high. His dream to empower the backward community and see them in the front row. In a country where a government job is considered as the ultimate aim for the majority, he took a leap to tell them about a life that exists beyond it- the importance of digital literacy in rural areas. He was working in a secure government job, but something didn’t feel right. “Life was limited to a room”, the founder Mr. Gokul Saini said. His job involved typing all day, but deep down, he knew he had more to offer. The idea of giving back to his community burned inside him. So in 2010, he left his job. And that’s how, ladies and gentlemen, with just one computer and a big heart, Yuva Jagriti Sansthan was formed! One Step at a Time At first, it wasn’t easy. The people in the village, especially those from backward communities, were not sure. Many thought that IT was only for the wealthy or those fluent in English. But the organization wasn’t ready to give up. “People didn’t believe us,” Mr. Saini admitted. “They wondered why I’d leave a good government job if I had real opportunities to offer.” But he kept pushing forward. The vision? To give back to the community he came from by promoting skill development in rural India. And, that is by making IT education accessible to the children of Rajasthan and making them at par with the ones in the city. It wasn’t like they started with some big numbers. There were only 40 students at first. But the results? Mind Blowing! Can you imagine that 32 of them- the first batch, went on to secure some prestigious government jobs? With the aura this profession has, this success set the stage for something bigger. That was the canon event. That was the moment things began to shift. The villagers started seeing the potential of IT education in rural areas. From 40 to 200 students: The Story of Growth What began in Alwar soon reached Behror. From there, Yuva Jagriti Sansthan began to grow. Today, it reaches out to around 150-200 students each month. But, how do they connect with children? They conduct monthly meetings with self-help women’s groups and community gatherings to spread the word. They invite children, studying in classes from 5th to higher education, to learn new IT skills like digital marketing, cybersecurity, and even new AI tools like ChatGPT. Also, they don’t hold onto old practices and skills. Yuva Jagriti Sansthan has always been committed to keeping up with the latest trends in IT education. The world in 2010 is totally different from 2024, and the learning pod has grown and evolved accordingly. The focus has shifted from theory-based education to practical skills, ensuring that students are well-trained to survive in today’s job market. Imagine all of this happening in a small district of a place that is known for its stereotypes that include people having a colonial approach and backward mindset against women. Also, another wholesome moment that the founder shared was, that the children who once couldn’t hold a computer mouse are now confidently typing, drawing, and even creating Excel sheets and Word files. Once the kids who thought they could never match the pace of the world, are now able to realize their potential and skills. They no longer feel underconfident and realize that they don’t need perfect English to thrive in the IT world. Isn’t that the best part? Due to their persistent efforts, Yuva Jagriti Sansthan was also noticed by our honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi. He connected with around 10-15 people (including women of self-help groups and people from backward communities) from the organization via video conference. Overcoming Challenges Of course, the road to success wasn’t easy. The organization was bound to face roadblocks, but then it’s easy for who? One of the biggest challenges was convincing the villagers to believe in IT. As already mentioned above, at first the people of rural Rajasthan were not ready to believe him. For them, the career choice was only limited to government jobs or the army, or being a labour. That’s it. So, it was very difficult to gain that trust and change the typical & limited thought process. Another challenge was the lack of proper infrastructure. Frequent power cuts meant that teaching had to continue even without computers. But you what was the best part? Even before our prime minister advocated this line- “Aapda ko awsar mei badalna”, Yuva Jagriti Sansthan implemented it. Even during these electricity cuts, classes didn’t stop. They continued teaching on slates and blackboards. Moreover, to make everything even more interesting, the students were taught through creative activities—paper cutting, project making, and discussions to keep learning on. So you see, that despite every block, the most important change was the shift in mindset. Parents who were once doubtful are now sending their kids to learn these crucial skills, even during school vacations. “This is our success,” the founder says proudly. “We’ve been able to change their thinking.” There is no force in the world that can stop a person with passion, perseverance, and confidence- and Yuva Jagriti Sansthan is a living example of this. Abhinav was born and raised in Nala Sopara, a small town in the suburbs of Mumbai. His father worked tirelessly in a sales job, making ends meet for the family. Coming from a below-middle-class family, it was challenging for Ritesh to pursue even basic education. This didn’t stop Ritesh from chasing his dreams as these obstacles made him more determined to pursue his passion. Ritesh was a boy in seventh grade who had a dream: to support his family by studying and earning money. Even when facing many challenges, his determination pushed him forward and life gave him a golden chance when he first stepped through the doors of Apni Pathshala, which encouraged him to find the passion within himself and pursue his dreams. Visiting Apni Pathshala: An Experience that Changed His Life Ritesh’s story began at Naryana Chandra Trust Fund in Mumbai where he first visited Apni Pathshala through an exhibition where students were showing classroom innovations. Before joining Apnipathshala he did not even know how to use a computer. Soon after, Ritesh enrolled in the Narayana Chandra Trust Fund in the 7th standard. But with constant hard work and eagerness to learn, Ritesh mastered computers. He learned to use Word, Excel, and Canva to design. But Ritesh knew that this was not enough for him to support his family. So, he started learning complex topics like Web Development, Game Development, and WordPress. Imagine a child in 7th class learning complex topics at the college level! It sounds impossible to accomplish but Ritesh was not giving up. He was eager to learn and he did. With dedicated hard work and support from the Apni Pathshala family, he was able to master these complex topics in just 3-4 months! His quick learning of these skills was nothing short of impressive. Ritesh’s enthusiasm and commitment did not go unnoticed. He completed his initial courses with flying courses, showing remarkable dedication to helping others. He started taking on projects independently and assisting with classroom management.
