Good Schooling vs Good Schools

Good school vs good schooling

Ever wonder what really makes a school great? Is it the teachers, the buildings, or something deeper? What if it’s the values and life skills taught there? When choosing for your child, should you focus on good schooling or good schools? Let’s break down why both matter and how they play different but essential roles in a child’s education. What role does Good Schooling play? Think about the difference between just knowing facts and actually understanding the world around you. Good schooling isn’t just about memorizing dates and formulas; it’s about teaching students how to think critically. Imagine a classroom where kids are encouraged to ask “why” and “how” instead of just accepting information as it is. When students learn to think this way, they don’t just learn—they start to love learning. This kind of curiosity and problem-solving mindset sticks with them for life, helping them navigate all sorts of challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Good schooling is like a garden where every student can grow in their own way. It’s not just about grades and test scores; it’s about helping each child discover who they are. Schools that focus on the whole child provide a variety of activities—like sports, arts, clubs, and more—so that students can explore different interests and find what they’re passionate about. This personal growth isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s crucial. When kids find what they’re good at and what they love, they build self-esteem and a strong sense of identity. And that’s what helps them confidently take on life’s challenges. Think about the difference between just knowing facts and actually understanding the world around you. Teachers are the heart of any school, and good schooling recognizes just how important they are. Imagine a school where teachers aren’t just doing the same thing year after year but are constantly learning and improving. Good schooling invests in professional development for teachers, giving them the latest tools, techniques, and knowledge to bring into the classroom. When teachers grow, so do their students. This ongoing training means that students receive top-notch instruction that’s always evolving with the times, making sure they’re getting the best education possible. No two communities are the same, and good schooling understands that. Imagine a school that doesn’t just follow a one-size-fits-all approach but instead tailors its programs to fit the unique needs of its students. Whether it’s adjusting the curriculum to better reflect students’ cultures or introducing new subjects that match the interests of the community, good schooling is flexible and responsive. This adaptability makes learning more relevant and engaging for students because they see themselves and their world reflected in what they’re studying. How Learning Pods Can Transform Education in India

Teacher teaching aptitude to students

Understanding why learning feels like a burden to kids today is really important. If we know what’s causing our kids to feel this way, we can find ways to make learning enjoyable again. It’s not just about getting good grades; it’s about helping kids love learning and feel good about going to school. Going to school used to be tiring earlier as well, but why has it changed over the period of time? Why has it become more toxic? Why have kids started to hate school? According to a report by the World Economic Forum, the current education system was founded at a time when industries needed workers. Back then, workers needed a relatively fixed set of skills and knowledge to do well. In today’s era, this “fixed” mindset is losing its relevance. We are in an era where adaptability and innovative thinking are of most value. Kids today feel a lot of pressure from both parents and teachers to do well in school. Imagine being told over and over again that you have to get the best grades or be at the top of your class. This constant pressure can make kids feel really stressed out and worried about disappointing the adults in their lives. When we talk about the early 90s, kids didn’t feel this pressure. They felt satisfied if they got above 60% in the class. But now the education system has changed how parents, students and teachers think about education and grades. Schools can sometimes feel like a big competition. Kids often compare themselves to their classmates, and there’s a lot of focus on who gets the highest marks or who is the best in different subjects. This competitive atmosphere has made learning feel like a race rather than a fun journey. When the bar is set so high, kids start feeling overwhelmed. High expectations from parents, teachers, and even themselves can lead to a lot of stress and anxiety. They might worry about failing or not being good enough, which takes away the joy of learning and replaces it with fear and pressure. Let’s discuss the reason behind this. Loss of engagement and interest Another reason kids lose interest in school is because it can be really boring. Many schools still use old teaching methods like long lectures and reading from textbooks. Imagine sitting through that without much interaction or fun activities. It’s no wonder kids feel disconnected from what they’re learning. On the other hand, social media, YouTube, and other online content are super engaging and exciting. They grab kids’ attention easily with videos, games, and interactive content. Kids are used to these fun and fast-paced experiences online, so traditional classroom methods just can’t compete. When learning feels like a chore, it’s hard for kids to stay motivated. They need more hands-on activities, group work, and interactive lessons to keep them interested. Schools need to step up and make learning as engaging as the content kids love online. This way, education can be more fun and effective, helping kids stay connected and excited about what they’re learning. Rote Learning vs. Creative Learning Rote learning, where kids just memorise facts without really understanding them, is another problem. It’s like cramming for a test, vomiting everything during the test and then forgetting everything right after. On the other hand, creative learning, which involves exploring ideas, asking questions, and solving problems, is much more engaging. When kids get to be creative, they’re more likely to enjoy learning and remember what they’ve learned. Sometimes, what kids learn in school doesn’t seem to relate to the real world. They might wonder, “When will I ever use this in real life?” If the curriculum doesn’t show how subjects like maths, science, or history apply to everyday life, kids can feel like what they’re learning is pointless. Making connections between school lessons and real-world applications can help spark their interest and make learning more meaningful. School curriculum with added pressure of competitions: Imagine coming home from a long day at school only to face a huge pile of homework. For many kids, this is a daily reality. When there’s too much homework, it can feel overwhelming and exhausting. Instead of having time to relax and recharge, kids are stuck doing schoolwork all evening. While homework alone might not be too much, the real problem starts when you add in competitive exams and coaching classes. Many kids attend extra coaching sessions after school, and these come with their own set of homework and pressure. So, it’s not just school and homework anymore—it’s school, homework, coaching classes, and the homework from those coaching classes. This combination can be incredibly toxic and overwhelming. With so much on their plates, kids often have very little time left for rest or fun activities. Things like sports, hobbies, or just playing with friends are important for a balanced life, but when the curriculum is overloaded with extra coaching, these activities get pushed aside. This lack of downtime can make kids feel burnt out and less excited about learning. All this stress and lack of free time can really take a toll on kids’ health. Physically, they might not get enough exercise or sleep, which are crucial for growing bodies. Mentally, the constant pressure and lack of relaxation can lead to anxiety, depression, and other issues. It’s important for kids to have a balanced lifestyle where they can enjoy learning without it harming their health. Can learning be made interesting in any way? Definitely, every problem has a solution. One way to make learning less of a burden is to focus on holistic education. This means looking at the child as a whole, not just their academic performance. Schools can emphasize the importance of social skills, emotional well-being, and physical health alongside traditional subjects. When kids feel cared for in all aspects of their lives, they are more likely to enjoy learning and do well. Using Technology to bridge the gap: Technology can be a great tool

Discover New Teaching Strategies At Learnscape Summit

Innovative Educational Practices Unveiled at the Learnscape Summit On 25th June 2024, our team had the privilege of attending the Learnscape Summit led by the Barefoot organization. This event was a treasure trove of insights into innovative educational practices, showcasing multiple programs that could revolutionize the way we approach education. About Unifly Organization Unifly is a nonprofit organization dedicated to collaborating with principals and teachers, who they refer to as School Leaders. Their primary operations are based in Delhi and Mumbai, where they strive to create interactive and engaging classroom environments. Rather than focusing on tech-related solutions and traditional curricula, Barefoot emphasizes hands-on and community-centric approaches. Their methods include painting numbers and tables on walls, and displaying maps on doors to make learning more tangible and accessible. Key Observations One of the most striking aspects of Unifly approach is its community-centric and impactful nature. Unlike other organizations, Barefoot uses specific terminology such as cohorts, school leaders, and clubs to foster a sense of community and collaboration. Instead of providing alternative learning solutions, they address gaps within the existing educational system by volunteering in schools and assisting teachers with extracurricular activities. Highlighted Projects and Initiatives Unifly dedication to innovation is evident through several key projects and initiatives: Project BALA (Building as Learning Aid) Project BALA connects individuals from various professions, transforming them into school leaders. Some participants even become educators. This project is known for its creative teaching methods, such as painting walls to teach history and grammar. It exemplifies how learning can be made more interactive and enjoyable. Innovative Pitching and Competition System Barefoot has introduced an innovative competition system for school principals with groundbreaking ideas to develop their schools. Winners receive funding to implement their ideas, fostering a spirit of innovation and practical implementation. This concept is something that Apnipathshala could potentially adopt to enhance its impact. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) The STEAM initiative involves an innovative tinkering lab system designed to teach these subjects in a practical and engaging manner. By incorporating hands-on activities, students can better grasp complex concepts and develop a love for learning. Pehli Shikshak Maa This initiative emphasizes the critical role of parents, especially mothers, in the education system. It encourages parental involvement and recognizes the influence of a supportive home environment on a child’s educational journey. Project Pioneer and Thoughtful Thinking Thoughtful Thinking is an initiative that introduced the concept of a parent and student report card. This allows parents to report on their child’s personal growth, while students reflect on their progress. It’s a holistic approach to tracking development, fostering self-awareness and parental engagement. Conclusion The Learnscape Summit provided us with numerous innovative ideas and practices that we can integrate into our own programs at Apnipathshala. By adopting similar strategies, we can enhance our impact and further support the development of schools and educators. The event highlighted the importance of community-centric approaches, creative teaching methods, and parental involvement in education. Meeting with Barefoot Co-founders During the summit, we had the opportunity to meet with the co-founders of the Barefoot organization. A follow-up meeting is tentatively scheduled with Johnathan, one of the co-founders, to discuss potential collaborations and gain further insights. This meeting holds the promise of strengthening our partnership and sharing best practices. Action Items To make the most of the insights gained from the Learnscape Summit, we have outlined several action items: By taking these steps, we can ensure that Apnipathshala remains at the forefront of educational innovation, supporting schools and educators in meaningful and impactful ways.

Microcertifications vs Exam Marks: A Better Path

Why Exam Marks Are Meaningless: We Should Focus on Proof of Learning Through Microcertifications and Online Portfolios In today’s fast-paced world, the traditional education system, with its heavy reliance on exam marks, is increasingly seen as inadequate for preparing students for real-world challenges. As we move further into the digital age, the focus is shifting from traditional assessments to more dynamic and practical forms of learning validation such as microcertifications and online portfolios. This article explores why exam marks are becoming meaningless and how proof of learning through these modern methods is reshaping education and career development. The Traditional Education System and Its Limitations Historical Context : The traditional education system was designed during the Industrial Revolution to meet the needs of an economy that required a workforce capable of following instructions and performing repetitive tasks. However, in today’s knowledge-based economy, this model is no longer sufficient. Our modern economy demands creativity, critical thinking, and specialized skills that the traditional system does not effectively foster. One-Size-Fits-All Approach : The conventional approach to education assumes that all students learn in the same way and at the same pace. This one-size-fits-all methodology fails to account for individual differences in learning styles, interests, and abilities. Such an approach not only stifles creativity but also disengages students who do not fit the mold, leading to an overall reduction in the quality of education and student satisfaction. Memorization Over Application : Traditional exams often prioritize memorization over the application of knowledge. Students are rewarded for their ability to recall information rather than demonstrate their understanding and problem-solving skills. This system emphasizes short-term retention over long-term comprehension and fails to prepare students for real-world challenges where applied knowledge is crucial. The Problem with Exam Marks Exam Stress and Anxiety The pressure to perform well in exams can lead to significant stress and anxiety among students. This high-stress environment can negatively impact their mental health and overall well-being. The relentless focus on marks can overshadow the importance of actual learning, turning education into a race for grades rather than a journey of intellectual growth. Limited Scope of Assessment : Exams typically assess a narrow range of skills, focusing on rote learning rather than critical thinking, creativity, and practical skills. This limited scope means that many important competencies go unmeasured. As a result, students might excel in exams yet lack essential skills needed for their future careers. Inconsistencies in Grading : Grading can be subjective and inconsistent, leading to unfair evaluations. Different teachers might grade the same paper differently, and even the same teacher might grade differently at different times. This inconsistency undermines the reliability of exam marks as a true measure of a student’s abilities and knowledge. Microcertifications: A New Era of Learning Validation Definition and Overview : Microcertifications are short, focused courses that validate specific skills and competencies. They are designed to be more relevant and aligned with industry needs compared to traditional degrees. These certifications provide targeted education that equips students with the precise skills demanded by employers. Flexibility and Accessibility : One of the major advantages of microcertifications is their flexibility. They can be pursued alongside work or other commitments, making education more accessible to a broader audience. This flexibility allows learners to continuously upgrade their skills without disrupting their professional or personal lives. Industry Relevance : Microcertifications are often developed in collaboration with industry experts, ensuring that the skills taught are up-to-date and relevant to current job markets. This industry alignment makes microcertifications highly valuable for both job seekers and employers, as they bridge the gap between education and employment. The Rise of Online Portfolios What Are Online Portfolios? : An online portfolio is a digital collection of a person’s work and achievements. It showcases projects, skills, and experiences in a visually appealing and easily accessible format. Unlike traditional resumes, online portfolios provide a dynamic way to present one’s capabilities and accomplishments. Benefits for Students and Professionals : Online portfolios provide a platform for individuals to demonstrate their skills and experiences comprehensively. They are especially valuable in creative fields, but their use is expanding across various industries. For students, portfolios offer a way to document their learning journey and present a holistic view of their capabilities. How They Showcase Skills and Projects : Through online portfolios, individuals can present detailed case studies, project outcomes, and even client testimonials, offering a richer picture of their capabilities than a traditional resume or exam marks ever could. This method allows for a more nuanced and in-depth presentation of one’s abilities and achievements. Comparing Traditional Exams to Modern Alternatives Practical vs. Theoretical Knowledge : Microcertifications and online portfolios emphasize practical knowledge and real-world application, whereas traditional exams often focus on theoretical understanding. This shift towards practical skills is crucial in preparing students for actual job requirements. Continuous Learning vs. Static Evaluation : Microcertifications support continuous learning, allowing individuals to update their skills regularly. In contrast, traditional exams provide a static evaluation that may quickly become outdated. Continuous learning ensures that individuals remain relevant and competitive in an ever-evolving job market. Customization and Personalization : Modern learning tools allow for customized and personalized learning paths tailored to an individual’s career goals and interests, enhancing engagement and effectiveness. This personalization makes learning more relevant and motivating for students, leading to better outcomes. Real-World Application of Microcertifications and Portfolios Case Studies and Success Stories : Many individuals have found success through microcertifications and online portfolios. For example, tech professionals often use platforms like GitHub to showcase their coding projects, leading to job offers and freelance opportunities. These real-world examples highlight the effectiveness of these modern learning validation methods. Employer Perspectives : Employers are increasingly recognizing the value of microcertifications and portfolios. They provide a more comprehensive view of a candidate’s abilities, making hiring decisions more informed and effective. Employers appreciate the clear demonstration of skills and the evidence of continuous learning. Student Experiences : Students report that creating online portfolios and obtaining microcertifications enhances their learning experience and makes
